Challenge / Goal
The Corridor district in Manchester has a unique location, with two big universities making it the biggest academic campus in the UK. Due to the daily commuting of the work force and around 70,000 students, the Corridor district faced various traffic challenges. To overcome these challenges, several restrictions were placed on the use of cars in the area between 6:00 and 21:00. Thus, suitable means for promoting sustainable last mile delivery in the area needed to be found.
Manchester City aims to increase the use of bikes up to 10 % of the transport share.
Solution
A municipality has piloted a cargo bike sharing system to promote the use of sustainable transportation alternatives. Manchester bike hire leased 4 cargo bikes enabled with a tracking system from a city-based SME, City Waggle. The Municipality offers the use of 4 bikes owned by Manchester bike hire to any organisation in Manchester who would like to use the bikes for end distribution. Based on the availability and need, 4 bikes can be chosen from the fleet of bikes of Manchester Bike hire. Manchester Bike Hire provides full maintenance, helps in booking and fleet management. The bikes come with a tracking system that enables data collection on usage. Owing to the flexibility of choosing from 4 bikes, there is an opportunity to try a variety of different types of models.
