Challenge / Goal

Identifying suitable technologies supporting improved district energy planning. There exist various solutions to improve the energy efficiency and self-sufficiency of districts. These increasingly include integration of local energy sources at individual buildings, or massive implementation of energy efficiency measures e.g., certain products, or in cases with large housing companies even renovation packages in groups of buildings. Changes in energy use and balances of individual buildings and districts may be notable and require assessment. Also relative sizes, consumption intensity and distances matter.

  • What degree of self-sufficiency may be achieved with certain solution packages?
  • Are there solar energy surpluses within the area?
  • Which buildings or building groups to prioritize?
  • How much peak load may be decreased if indoor temperature set point is lowered by 1 degree?

Answering these types of questions requires work-intensive modelling and collection of various data.

Solution

Use existing 3D city models to collect up-to-date basic information about buildings in the district and to construct simplified energy models of individual buildings automatically.

Calculate the effect of improvement measures:

  • Define sets of measures by building groups
  • Simulate resulting hourly energy load and generation profiles for individual buildings

Summarize and display results:

  • Absolute and relative summaries for individual buildings (table, map-based visualization)
  • Performance indicators for the district (table)
