Challenge / Goal

Adven's Lippulaiva property features Europe's largest geothermal heating and cooling system, complemented by solar panels and an electric battery, creating an integrated system focused on carbon neutrality and maximizing renewable energy utilization. The geothermal system provides heating for the entire complex and meets 100% of its cooling needs, while surplus heat from ventilation and cooling systems is returned to the geothermal field. This heating and cooling solution also serves nearby residential buildings.

On-site solar panels generate renewable electricity, which is stored in the electric battery, establishing a flexible and efficient energy management system. The goal is for Lippulaiva to achieve energy positivity. As the electrification of vehicles continues to grow, there will be an increased demand for electricity. However, the presence of multiple renewable energy sources ensures resilience, allowing one source to compensate for any shortcomings of another, whether due to climate conditions or infrastructure limitations.

Solution

The solution includes 4 MW ground source heat pump plants, providing heating and cooling for Lippulaiva and recycling waste heat sources.

Electricity demand is covered with PV panels (roof and facade, peak power of approximately 630 kWp) and certified renewable electricity.

A significant achievement of the project is that the planned district heating connection has not been used, even during prolonged freezing periods. Adven has succeeded in making the cold and heating energy production as reliable as traditional district heating. Regarding the solar panels, the returns have met the expected targets, allowing to cover a portion of the property's consumption with the electricity generated by the panels.

Citizen participation

Passive involvement of the local residents, informing them about the project progress.
