Challenge / Goal

Investing in energy-efficient solutions has been pivotal in the planning of Lippulaiva. Adven's largest geothermal heating and cooling system in a commercial property in Europe, combined with Lippulaiva's solar panels and electric battery, form a comprehensive system aimed at carbon neutrality and efficient utilization of renewable energy. The geothermal system covers all heating and 100% of the cooling needs, with excess heat from ventilation and grocery store cooling systems being returned to the geothermal field. The heating and cooling solution also extends to the surrounding residential buildings. On-site solar panels generate renewable electricity, and the electric battery stores energy, creating a flexible and efficient energy management system.

Solution

In the Lippulaiva block, there are various energy consumers in terms of heating, cooling, and electricity. Different energy consumption profiles (e.g., shopping centres, residential buildings, daycare) complement each other, as their peak consumption times do not overlap temporally. The benefit of this characteristic in terms of energy efficiency can be increased using energy storage. Regarding heating, geothermal wells and hot water tanks serve as energy storage. For electricity consumption, energy efficiency can be enhanced using a battery and demand response.

All building systems are integrated into a single platform, where data is enriched with building analytics to support sustainability principles. AI is utilized in energy management to predict the best control algorithms in each situation to achieve environmental goals, and all data is consolidated on a digital platform, which includes visual dashboards supporting operational control. Extensive integration possibilities and programmable interfaces make this innovation open, allowing for the utilization of new innovations in the future.
